Oh plus getting lighter wheels could have helped as it has some Supra wheels on it at the time that are meant for a sports car not a fuel savings little commuter car like this is. I can see this getting a lot closer to its originally EPA rating if I was on the open road without all the weight. In another all city gas tank I averaged 30 miles per gallon. The last long road trip it had was over 400 mile and even being stuck in stop and go traffic for nearly 2 hours, and getting diverted on a 16 mile uuphillu climb all while carrying a set of heavy wheels in the back I still managed to get a real world 40 miles per gallon. I have driven this little car up and down the state and haven’t had any problems with it. This 1983 model was revamped from the previous generation to give it a more aerodynamic front end to actually increase miles per gallon by 10% over the previous year’s model already high EPA ratings. Its last model year in the US was in 1984, which is when Toyota switched over completely to front wheel drive cars. The Starlet earned an EPA estimated city mileage rating of 42 mpg and an estimated highway mileage rating of 54 mpg.
